Resumen:
Phytoplankton biomass control by zooplankton was investigated in Los Padres Lake, a shallow vegetated lake of the Argentine Pampa plain. A mesocosm experiment was carried out during spring of 1999. Treatments include removal and natural zooplankton abundances. Chlorophyll a concentration and total suspended solids increased significantly in enclosures without zooplankton. Conversely, total dissolved phosphorus concentration decreased when grazers were selectively removed. Results showed the importance of grazing Cladocera in the control of phytoplankton biomass and total suspended solids concentration, which may have a positive effect on water quality of pampasic lakes with submerged macrophytes.
