Resumen:
Objectives: In Lagostomus maximus physiological embryonic death occurs.Uterine horns (UH) cranial and middle implantations are reabsorbed whilethe caudal ones continue with their development due to a still unknownphenomenon. Our goal was to study the structure of the UH using ultrasonographicand morphometric techniques in non-pregnant females todetermine whether possible anatomo-histological variations of the organcould be responsible for the aforementioned process. Methods: Three non-pregnant females were anesthetized and examinedby ultrasonography (Mindray Z5). After euthanasia, UH were sectioned in 7sectors following their cranial-caudal axis. Samples were processed forinclusion in paraffin. Slides were stained with the Gomoris trichrometechnique. From each section, images of two zones (vertex and center)were captured. Thickness of the UH wall (T), endometrium (E), myometrium(ME), inner muscular layer (iM), outer muscular layer (oM) andvascular layer (V) were measured using Image J.Results: Ultrasonography showed that both UH are tubular and swell inthe craniocaudal direction. An echogenic uterine wall and normal contentin their cavities were evidenced. In longitudinal sections, both UH diametersincrease in the craniocaudal direction along to the increase in thethickness of the uterine wall. Significant differences between the mean ofvertex and center of T, E, M, iM, oM and V in each sector (p0.05) wereobserved which justify an oval contour (thin vertices and wide centralregion) of the UH. Significant differences were detected among the 7analyzed sectors; the UH showed a widening in thickness of their wall dueto the thickness of all the tunics and layers studied in the cranial-caudaldirection.Conclusion: The greater thickness of endometrium and myometrium inthe caudal sectors could favor the complete development of the conceptus, while the specific increase in the value of the EEV in the last uterine sectionswould suggest a greater vascular supply.
