Resumen:
Background: Sleep is a complex physiological process resulting from the interaction between the functioning of the neuroendocrine system, biological clocks and biochemical processes, with environmental, cultural and social aspects that acquire special relevance during the puerperium and lactation. Breastfeeding in early postpartum months requires not only optimum maternal nutrition but also adequate maternal sleep to restore energy and improve the functioning of physical, cognitive and emotional status. Sleep loss of more than 30 minutes each night can affect daytime functioning and social interactions. Moreover, there is evidence on the effect of insomnia on lipid, glycemic and protein metabolism. In addition, sleep disorders are associated with changes in redox homeostasis. Objective: the aim of this study was to analyze the relation between insomnia and biomarkers in human milk. Methods: Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was administered in twenty one adult healthy women from the city of Cordoba (Argentina). Proteins, glucose, triglycerides, polyphenols, and oxidative markers (superoxide anion, hydroperoxides and lipoperoxides) were measured in their milk. Complexity of age, insomnia and biochemical variables required to be analyzed by partial least regression (PLS), with correlations being expressed as betas (β-PLS). Results: insomnia showed an inverse relation with age (β-PLS = -0.41, p
