Increases in seed number per area can be reached by: i) More seeds per pod and ii) increases in seed dry weight. For i) it is proposed: manipulate the duration of reproductive sub-periods, screening for stress tolerance (as shading and heat stress), and high fruiting efficiency (genotype variability, high biomass partitioning to sedes from branches, R/FR effects post-flowering).For ii) it is proposed to study stress Tolerance, maternal genotype effects, expression of expansins, and partitioning of carbon reserves to seed filling.
