Resumen:
Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi affects about 8 million people worldwide and 100 million are at risk of infection. It has two phases: acute and chronic. In the latter, infected people may stay without any clinical symptoms for the rest of their life or developin up to 30% of the cases, cardiomyopathy and/or digestive abnormalities. Until now, no any suitable prognostic biomarkers have been found, which makes difficult to clinicians to make sound clinical decisions. In this context and considering the important role of glycobiology in the T. cruzi life cycle, we decided to explore if the serum N-glycome profile could be addressed as aprognostic marker in the chronic phase of the disease. For this, N-gylcans released from sera of asymptomatic (N=9), cardiac (N=7) as well as non-infected individuals (N=8) were characterized by both hydropilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC-UPLC) and weak anion exchange chromatography (WAX-HPLC).
