Climate-controlled vegetation change mediated by disturbance regime in a subtropical montane forest

During 10 years of increasing rainfall, tree recruitment, mortality and canopy gaps, all increased in a 6-hectares plot. Composition changed consistently throughout the plot but was accelerated in subplots having more treefalls in the pre-census period, suggesting an asymmetric speed of change between periods of increasing and decreasing rainfall.
