The main treatment since the 1930s, has involved the use of psychostimulant compounds, such as methylphenidate and amphetamine. These drugs enhance neurotransmission of dopamine and norepinephrine. Paradoxically, psychostimulants exert therapeutical benefits, attenuating hyperactivity and often improve cognitive performance (2). ADHD is a heterogeneous disorder, probably as a result of different combinations of genetic and environmental factors (3). Several studies indicate that pregnancy and delivery complications raise the risk for ADHD. Prospective studies of infants show that fetal exposure to maternal alcohol use leads to behavioral, cognitive, and learning problems that could present as ADHD (4). The main goal of the present study is to investigate if the exposure to a moderate ethanol dose, during late gestation, is sufficient to produce abnormal behaviors, similar to those observed in ADHD. Additionally, we also intend to establish if metylphenidate (MPH) ameliorates these behavioral alterations.
