Increasing the Joint Energy Efficiency of Rubber Production Processes by Incorporating an ORC

The present work investigates the feasibility of improving the global energy efficiency of a petrochemical industry through the combination of an organic Rankine cycle with the refrigeration system of two specific copolymerization processes. The proposed energy system allows the production of electricity from industrial waste heats and simultaneously provides an alternative solution to improve the regulation of the reaction temperatures in the process. The performances of a supercritical and a subcritical ORC are compared at steady-state conditions. Main simulation results show the feasibility of implementing the proposed combined system. It is proven that the electrical energy produced through the present proposal can reach ~40 % of the electrical energy demanded by the refrigeration system.
