Resumen:
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of changes in the availability of water and nitrogen on the energy potential and quality of corn stover to be used as raw material for the generation of biofuels. A maize hybrid was sowed in a randomized block design with three replications, two water levels (rain-fed and irrigation) and two nitrogen levels (0 and 120 kg/ha). The vegetative biomass yield, nitrogen content, C/N ratio, energy content, elemental composition (C, H, N, O), theoretical biogas yield (TBY) and theoretical ethanol yield (TEY) were determined. There were no differences in energy content of the residues. TBY was not affected by water and nitrogen availability but differences in C/N ratio suggest that biochemical methane production (BMP) should be performed as a complementary analysis. Preliminary results suggest that changes in water and nitrogen availability affects TEY.
