Resumen:
Kernel weight has been studied in maize hybrids launched in different decades, but with no reference to variable soil water conditions. The aim of this study was to characterize how kernel weight is set in two modern maize hybrids in contrast to an older one when grown in variable soil water conditions. For this purpose, the rate and duration of kernel growth were surveyed during active grain filling. Three single-cross hybrids were sown in five experiments: DK2F10 (1980) and two modern DK682RR and DK690MG (both 2004). The experiments had variable soil water conditions. Kernel weight reductions in response to reduced soil water availability during grain filling were associated more to kernel filling duration than kernel filling than to grown rate. These results demonstrated that reductions in soil water availability during grain filling would not affect final grain weight in modern hybrids respect to an old hybrid in the South East Region of Buenos Aires province.
