Antioxidant ultradeformable liposomes based on blueberry extracts

Abstract— Extracts from three different varieties of blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) were obtained and characterized. The highest antioxidant activity was found in the extract from Millenia variety. This extract was loaded into ultradeformable liposomes, and -although the anthocyanine cromophore was bleached when mixed with the phospholipids- the antioxidant activity of radical scavenging remained almost unaltered. Blueberryloaded ultradeformable liposomes (UL-B) are potential tools for transcutaneous delivery of antioxidants for skin protection against damage from processes such as free radical attack
