Landfill methane emissions: Assessing the suitability of MBT compostlike output in landfill biocovers

Abstract: We investigated the physical and chemical characteristics of the MBT compost-like output (CLO) in relation to its use as landfill biocover and carrier of methane oxidation. After one year of monitoring, the MBT CLO had high porosity and adequate water retention, which are fundamental characteristics for insuring goodpermeability of oxygen and methane. Once applied in the field, it reached acceptable levels of stabilization andmaintained its structural properties throughout one year. Importantly, the material sustained vegetation growth andprovided a suitable media for methanotrophs.
