The use of Poycystina (Protista: Radiolaria) as hydlological and pateoecological indicators in the South Atlantic Ocean. The wide possibilities of the use of Polycystina for hydrological and paleoecological purposes at the present time is seriously affected by the poor state of the systematics of their Recent, as well as fossil taxa. Their densities both in the plankton and in the sediments of the Southern Atlantic are high enough as t o constitute an excellent tool for stratigraphic and paleoecological studies. However, a thorough previous analysis of radiolarian systematics and distribution in the area are needed. In addition, some local problems such the poor preservation of their skeletons in the sediments, the difrerences between the planktonic fauna and the corresponding bottom assemblages, their absence from the Argentine Sea and surrounding areas, and the poor state of knowledge of the radiolarians of the Southern Atlantic, should be carefully considered.
