Abstract
The paleoecological and paleoenvironmental conditions which are shown were obtained by
means of a multidisciplinary study carried out in the fossiliferous localities of Bosque José
Ormaechea and Bosque Víctor Szlápelis from the south region of the Musters and Colhué
Huapí lakes (Chubut, Argentina). The integral study of these fossiliferous localities was made
on the basis of the presence of alga, briofitas and fern spores, grains of pollen, dinocysts,
fitolitos, estomatocistes, radiolaries, sponge spicles, foliar compressions and impressions, and
premineralized by silicification woods. The integral study of the fossiliferous content along with
the sedimentological characteristics in the southern area of the Musters and Colhué Huapi
lakes, during the lower Paloecene, suggest that from a paleoenvironmental point of view the
Salamanca Formation grades from coastal marine environments to fully restricted ones
(lagoons or fresh water swamps). The fossiliferous content allows us to infer that they have
developed in a stable environment of moderate-warm and humid weather, with dry summer and
rainy spring like periods, where the rainfall does not seem to have acted as a limiting factor for
the growth of the tafoflora. The temperature has not probably been lower than the freezing point
owning to the absence of rings with cryogenic signs.
