Resumen:
The adrenal gland is a key component of the hypothalamus?pituitary?adrenal (HPA) axis, playing a crucial role in the adaptation of organism to stressors. Adrenal steroidogenesis is a vital process widely regulated at several stages. Immune mediators released during infections are known to influence adrenal steroidogenesis, as is the case of tuberculosis (TB), in which the prolonged presence of the pathogen together with an exacerbated immune response is likely to alter the endocrine profile. IL-1β which is mainly produced by macrophagesi s a key mediator in TB. Beyond its immunological effects, IL-1β stimulates the production of ACTH and the ensuing cortisol release. However it is not well known whether this cytokine exerts a local effect on the adrenal gland itself. As such, we decided to study the effect of different concentrations of IL-1β, at 6, 12, 24 and 48 h, in the human cell line NCI-H295R, derived from a carcinoma of adrenal cortex, stimulated with Forskolin (Fsk), or not.
