Resumen:
In nature, plants are constantly exposed to numerous events causing different types of stresses. To complete its cycle of life under these conditions, plants have developed sophisticated mechanisms for sensing changes in its environments, being able not only to adapt to these adversities, but also to evolve and distribute in more diverse habitats.Plants need to properly balance growth and immunity resources to maintain optimal conditions throughout their life cycle. In the balance between growth and defense, resources are divided between the accumulation of biomass and the activation of defensive responses. Although it is generally recognized that the distribution of the limited carbon stock determines the antagonism between such responses, the mechanisms that determine their regulatory processes are poorly understood. Recently brassinosteroids (BRs), growth-promoting hormones, have emerged as essential regulators of the balance between cellular development and immunity processes, although the molecular mechanisms underlying these roles remain unclear. This work summarizes the main elements of knowledge about the biology of BRs and those related to the role of natural BRs and Cuban synthetic analogues in the development and activation of defense mechanisms in plants. The importance of the use of these compounds in order to increase agricultural yields and protect crops against different types of environmental stress is also explained.
