It is well-known that molten slag plays an important role in the steel production due to its capacity to withdraw impurities and inclusions out of the molten metal, as well de-phosphoration, de-sulphuration and protection of steel from re-oxidation. For that purpose, lime/dolomite mixtures are usually added during an electric arc furnace (EAF) operation to adjust basicity and saturation of the slag. Considering the high concentration of MgO present in MgO-C refractories, material recovered at the end of their life cycle can be a good alternative to be used as dolomitic lime alternative in the EAF. Tests of spent crushed MgO-C bricks as dolomitic lime substitute were carried out in the EAF of Tenaris Siderca. The benefits are evaluated in this paper. The process of grinding the bricks, their incorporation to the furnace during fusion, the evaluation of refractory wear and the performance of the resulting slag are also analyzed. The results show that spent refractories are a suitable alternative to replace dolomite as a MgO-containing slag conditioner in Tenaris Siderca EAF, showing with good operative performance and positive economic benefit.
