Resumen:
We propose that the interaction among climate, forest structure and species traits (specifically wood density) influence aboveground biomass distribution and rates of aboveground biomass accumulation (i.e. AGB and AGB change, respectively) along elevations in subtropical montane forests. Using data from 40 permanent plots, covering 2000 m of elevational gradient and 550 km of latitudinal gradient, we quantify stocks of AGB in different forest types. In addition, we analyze variations in basal area and mean wood density at the plot level across forest types to discuss relations between AGB and forest structure and species composition. Finally, we estimate AGB change to identify which forest types may be acting as sink carbon in subtropical Andean forests.
