Resumen:
Organotin compounds do not exist as such in nature, and they are one of the most toxic substances that reach the coastal zone by anthropogenic activities. These compounds, particularly tributyltin (TBT), are active members of the formulation of antifouling paints, which are mainly applied in the hulls of ships to prevent fouling. Once released into the marine environment, they persist in water and sediments due to its poor solubility and mobility, and they enter and accumulate in the food chain. In this study, the determination of TBT and DBT in sediment samples from Bahia Blanca estuary is performed by CG-MS. Briefly, the sediment samples were pre-treated with a NaOH/methanol solution and the organotin compounds were subsequently extracted in hexane and derivatized with sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Also, ultrasound (US) was applied to accelerate the process extraction/derivatization. Under the optimized conditions, the results were compared with those obtained when the conventional method (UNEP 1994). The method based on US were able to reduce the time of pre-treatment and the recovery rates were similar for both methods.
