Model error can be represented by the incorporation of an additive stochastic process. It is not possible to infer the variance of such processes via state augmentation in the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). We propose a novel technique based on nested 4D-EnKFs to estimate model error parameters, which can also be extended to filter parameters like multiplicative covariance inflation or localization scale.
