Resumen:
Supersonic dislocations have been theoretically proposed by Smith, Eshelby, and Weertman, among others. However, they have until now escaped experimental verification. Current efforts using molecular dynamics indicate that transonic and supersonic (partial) dislocations can exist. The predictions of these calculations are shown for Ni and Si. There is indirect experimental evidence, from TEM observation of recovery specimens subjected to laser shock compression. The observations and molecular dynamics calculations are presented, together with a historical background.Research supported by NNSA/SSAP and by UC San Diego Center for Frontiers in HEDS.
