Resumen:
The Andalhuala Formation (Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene)outcrops atdifferent localities of Catamarca, San Juan and Tucuman provinces. It is mainly composed of mudstones, sandstones and conglomerates with sporadic tuffaceous beds, recording continental deposition related to differentfluvial settings. At the Encalillalocality (Tafidel Valle, Tucuman Province), the unit is characterized by two main facies. The first comprises mudstones with local occurrences of sandstones, representing deposition in a flood plain subenvironment. The second is composed of sandstones, gravelly-sandstones and conglomerates, representing sedimentation in a braided channel belt. Overall, the facies assemblage is interpreted to have been deposited in ananastomosing fluvial system, with subenvironments comprising a braided channel belt anda floodplain area with crevasse splays.
