Resumen:
We have shown that vitamin A deficiency affects lipid metabolism in heart (Oliveros et al., Nutr Res, 2000). Here we study its effect on aorta and serum lipids of male and female rats. Wistar rats at 21 days of age received during three months a free Vitamin A diet (-A groups) and the same diet added with 8 mg of retinol (retinyl palmitate per kg diet) (control groups). The deficiency was confirmed by serum and liver Vitamin A levels. Phospholipids (P) (micromol Pi/g tissue) and triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol (C) (microg/g tissue) of aorta were determined previous extraction with isopropanol:hexane 2:3 v/v, and separation by TLC. Serum lipids were determined by Wiener´s kits. When compared with controls, -A male showed a decrease of serum TG, C and HDLc (p<0.025) and an increase of aorta P and C (p<0.05). –A female showed a decrease of serum TG, C, HDLc and (LDLc + VLDLc), without changes in aorta. The amount of free cholesterol and P is significantly higher in male rats in relation to females in both groups: A+ and A-. Total lipids increased only in males, in A- group. We did not find changes in esterified cholesterol in any groups. Nutritional Vitamin A deficiency modifies the lipid contents in serun and aorta of male rats while in female it only affects the serum lipids.
