Resumen:
During the ontogeny of birds, the differentiations between the two ovaries are dissimilar, while the right degenerates, the left gain functionality in the adult. This paper describes the development of the ovaries of Columba livia, in order to help characterize the sequence and gonadal differentiation in birds. 32 embryos were analyzed and 12 newborns from observations under a stereomicroscope and SEM. Histological analysis was performed using standard hematoxylin-eosin staining. Gonadal outlines are evident in the stage 19, as two elongated bodies in the ventro-medial region of the mesonephros. In stage 27 the right ovary consists of a core region, while the left has in addition to this cortical zone. From stage 37 is displayed progressive regression right gonad to 5 days after hatching which is absent. In the left ovary from stage 37 are evident oogonia nests in the cortex, and from los5 days post-hatching displayed the follicles and a gradual increase in the number of follicle cells. These results provide the basis for future comparative studies with other species of birds.
