Resumen:
Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease characterized by gross derangement in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, due to deficiency in insulin secretion and/or action. In recent work we have demonstrated that decoction of Smallanthus macroscyphus (Baker ex Martius) A. Grau leaves was effective to reduce postprandial glucose and useful in the treatment of diabetic animals. In the present study we evaluated the improvement of biochemical parameters in diabetic rats after Polymatin A treatment, a sesquiterpene lactone of S. macroscyphus leaves. Thirty days treatment with Polymatin A by oral route significantly decreased the blood levels of glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, cholesterol, LDLc and aterogenic index in comparision with untreated diabetic rats. Immunofluorescent staining of the pancreatic tissues in diabetic rats presented a weak insulin immunoreactivity in the islets of Langerhans compared to the intense staining observed in diabetic rats treated with Polymatin A. These results provide a scientific basis supporting the efficacy of Polymatin A treatment for improve the metabolic control in diabetes.
