First, a switched LinearParameter-Varying (LPV) controller with different switching regions related tohyper- and euglycemia situations is designed, providing stability andperformance guarantees. In [2], its closed loop performance has been successfullytested with unannounced meals on the complete in silico adult cohort of the UVA/Padova metabolic simulator, whichhas been accepted by the U.S. FDA in lieu of animal trials.  In order to design more aggressive controllers toreduce postprandial hyperglycemia, but without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia, the Safety Auxiliary Feedback Element (SAFE)  procedure presented in [1] is added. This mechanism is basedon sliding mode concepts as a way to reduce hypoglycemia events, which could beinduced by the previous controller. To this end, it adapts the controller's gainto avoid violating given constraints on the insulin-on-board (IOB). In thisway, it provides a safety layer that can be adjusted according to medicalcriteria and is robust against sensor failures and over-estimated prandialinsulin doses. An example that shows the effectiveness of thecombination of both the switched LPV controller and the SAFE algorithm isillustrated in the figure below.
