Glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferses (GPATs) There have been described 4 isoforms in mammals. They catalyze the first and limiting step in glycerolipid synthesis. GPAT 1 and 2 are located in the outer mitocondrial membrane; GPAT 3 and 4 in the endoplasmic reticulum. GPAT 2 Mitocondrial enzime, identified in liver from Gpat1 -/- mice. Not expressed in lipogenic tissues like the other GPAT isoforms, GPAT2 mRNA and protein are abundant in testis. It incorporates preferentially arachidonic acid into TAG. Is present in certain cancer-derived human cell lines and tumors. The human and mice isoforms might be regulated epigenetically.
