This paper presents some possibilities for the derivation of simple isotropic damage models to simulate the failure of concrete under different stress or strain conditions, with special attention to fracture and strain localisation under tension. The resulting algorithms are simple and suitable for large scale computations. Comparison with a standard fixed smeared crack model is attemped. To this end the relative performance of both models is evaluated at local (constitutive) and global (structural) levels in two different test examples.
