Resumen:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem that requires an appropriate cell immune response (IR) to be controlled, although an exacerbated IR is also involved in tissue damage. We have found that TB patients at the time of diagnosis (T0) had elevated plasma levels of proinflammatory mediators, TGF-β and cortisol together with diminished concentrations of Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and decreased body mass index (BMI). These patients also showed an increased expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) γ and α in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM). We investigated the expression of the 2 PPAR isoforms by real time PCR in PBM of pulmonary TB patients at T0 and at 2, 4 and 6 months of specific treatment. The cohort was composed of 39 adult patients with TB (disease severity: 9 mild, 15 moderate and 15 severe), 10 of them completing treatment and follow-up, and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCo).
