A new concept for HWR fue bundles, namely CARA, is presented. The CARA design allows to improve all the major performances in the PHWR fuel technology. Among others, it reaches higher burnup and thermalhydraulic safety margins with lower fuel pellet temepratures and r/HM mass ratio, keeping the fuel mass content per unit lenght and the channel pressure drop. The CARA solution besides obtains these goals by using a single diameter of fuel rods.
