Resumen:
Economic theory generally proceeds by constructing models. Theyare often written in mathematical language but, apart from their for-mal expression, they use metaphors, analogies and pieces of intuitionto motivate their assumptions and to give support to their conclusions. We try to capture all these elements in a formal scheme based on theidea that all those pieces of information should guide in the construc-tion of suitable models, which later may lead to the development ofnew theories. In this process of building models, abduction, a processfor arriving at hypotheses, plays a key role. It is component of whatRescher (1977) calls Peircean qualitative induction. In this paper wewill show how it works and how important meta-theoretic criteria arefor the nal outcome of the process.
