Resumen:
Activated carbon cloths were synthesized from denim fabric by phosphoric acid activation in an inert atmosphere. The effect of the acid concentration (5-15 wt%) used in the impregnation stage and of the thermal treatment temperature in the range 600-950 °C on porosity development, acidic oxygen surface groups, and morphology of the resulting activated carbon cloths were examined. Surface properties were dependent on a combined effect of the operating conditions employed, though the temperature exerted a major influence. Activated carbon cloths prepared at 950 °C with 10 wt% acid concentration showed a maximum BET surface area (1055 m2/g), and well preserved fibers integrity. Substantial changes in the thermal behavior of the precursor due to acid impregnation were detected from measurements by thermogravimetric analysis using samples of pristine and acid-treated denim
