The planting materials used to
establish silvopastoral systems (SSP) with poplar in the Delta of the Paraná
River are the cuttings (E), the one year (G1) and the two year old (G2) pole
cutting (without root). While using E the cost of planting is lower, income
from animals grazing in (SSP) start at the 4 th or 5 th year after plantation.
In contrast, when G1 and G2 are planted the cost of establishment increase, and
cattle grazing start earlier (1 or two years after plantations). The aim of
this study was to evaluate the dasometric response of E, G1 and G2 of Populus deltoides `Australia 106/60 ',
at the fifth year of planting. The following treatments were carried out in a
total of 25 plants each; E, G1 and G2. En each plant diameter at breast height
(DAP) and total height where recorded annually from 2002 to 2007. ANOVA
analysis was determined for trees variables (DAP and total height) vary with
time (years). Trees originated from G2 presented the highest DAP values
followed by G1, being the treatment E which showed the lowest values (P
<0.01). These differences were recorded for all years (P> 0.1). There was
significant interaction between the planting material and the year for total
height (P <0.01). This was because there were differences between the
various heights of planting materials in the years 2003 and 2005 (P <0.01),
whereas in 2007, although there were differences among the materials (P
<0.01) there were no significant differences between E and G1 (P> 0.05).
The treatment G2 remained significantly higher than other planting materials (E
and G1). In Populus deltoides `106/60 ' two year old poplar pole
cutting, are excellent propagating material for silvopastoral plantations in
the Paraná River Delta.
