Resumen:
The effect of leaf aqueous extracts in early decomposition of Saccharum sp., sodium chloride and mannitol were evaluated in laboratory bioassays on germination and seedling growth of a wide range of plant species (Allium cepa, Triticum aestivum, Raphanus sativum and Lactuca sativa). The osmotic potential of extracts and control solutions was between 10 to 40 mM. The aqueous extracts considerably reduced seed germination of dicotyledoneous and radicle lengths of all assayed species. Comparing I25 values (estimated concentration at which 25% inhibition occurs) Saccharum sp. extracts were more effective inhibitors on the germination of dicotyledonous than on monocotyledonous test species. The germination was not affected by NaCl and mannitol solutions. Otherwise, the radicle elongation was more affected by NaCl than mannitol in dicotyledoneous. Our results suggest a toxic effect of sodium and chloride ions on dicotyledoneous species.
