Resumen:
Social Dominance Orientation (SDO, Pratto, Sidanius, Stallworth & Malle, 1994) concept refers to a general attitudinal orientation toward intergroup relations, which reflects the preference for equal or hierarchical relationships -in terms of superiority and inferiority dimensions-. Recent research has shown the existence of a bidimensional structure: opposition to equality (OEQ) and group-based dominance (GBD) (Jost & Thompson, 2000; Silvan-Ferrero & Bustillos, 2007). On the basis of social dominance theory, the purpose of present study is to investigate the relationship between the dimensions of SDO and social values (Schwartz, 1992). An empirical study was conducted on a convenience sample of 800 participants (400 military college students and 400 civilian college students). Significant correlations between values and SDO dimensions were found. Results show that SDO is positively associated with the value dimensions of self-promotion and conservation, and negatively associated with self-transcendence. These results are also presented in the case of GBD. OEQ shows a positive association with self-promotion and a negative association with self-transcendence and openness to change. Differences between military and civilian are also found. Military students exhibited higher levels of SDO, GBD, OEQ and a tendency to emphasize conservation, while civilian showed higher tendency to self-transcendence and openness to change. Men had significantly higher social dominance scores than women, as higher levels of conservation and self-promotion. Women show a tendency to self-transcendence. Finally, younger people present higher levels of SDO, GBD and OEQ and conservation than older people who reveal superior level of self-transcendence.
