Mechanical alloying (MM) and a combination of this process and low temperature heating were used to synthesize the intermetallic MmNi5 and a MmNi5-Ni mixture, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze particle size and morphology to determine the governing mechanisms during the milling of each sample. The changes in structure, microstructure and effects on hydrogen interaction due to milling time are presented. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine strain and crystallite size. From these results, the differences in final nanocomposite microstructure characteristics is analyzed.
