In this paper we present a new structural method that rearranges occurrence matrices to the specific block lower-triangular form required for the classification of unmeasured variables in plant instrumentation problems. The technique, called Hybrid Approach, is supported by a group of specially designed heuristics. It is robust and efficient, yielding a remarkably satisfactory degree of decoupling. Besides, it allows the incorporation of extra information in order to enable a precise characterization of each process plant in particular, thus ensuring realistic results. A performance analysis for an ethane plant is also described.
