Finite element and other Galerkin approximations are oftenused to construct finite dimensional systems for control design.,These methods produce systems with very special structure andthis structure can be exploited in developing computational al-Forithms. A considerable portion of numerical linear algebrais devoted to numerical methods for systems involving banded,sparse or block diagonal matrices. However, most numerical algorithmscurrently used in control design do not take advantageof the special structure that results from approximating infinitedimensional systems by Galerkin models. We discuss the problemof computing system radii (e.g., controllability, stabilizability,observability and detectability margins) for finite elementapproximations of elastic system. The simple one dimensionalwave equation will be used to illustrate the basic ideas.
