Resumen:
Biofilm, a complex microorganism community fixed to certain substrates, serves as a complementary food source for shrimp juveniles of several species. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of biofilm on culture of Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis juvenile shrimps. Juveniles were stocking in nine fibreglass tanks (300 L each) at a density of 100 animals/m2. The following treatments were run by triplicate: PSM: polyethylene sheets added and maintained throughout the experiments; PSR: same sheets as before, but replaced by new ones every day; NS: no sheets added. A small sample of plastic sheet was removed once a week, in order to determine the dry weight, chlorophyll a concentration and abundance of microorganisms in the biofilm formed on sheets. After 30 days, survival, body weight and stomach content of juveniles were also determined. Biofilm from the PSM treatment, showed a progressive increment of all the measured  measured, i.e., a very good developing on the plastic sheets added. Analysis of stomach content of juveniles taken from the same treatment, indicated an active feeding on flagelates and pennate diatomea present in biofilm. However, no significant (p>0.05) differences were observed among treatments in neither survival nor body weight of juveniles. Nevertheless, more subtle and/or delayed effects of biofilm on juvenile growth should not be discarded.
