This article presents an urban overview of prostitution in the city of Rio de Janeiro from the late colonial period to the recent trends. It covers a critical review of recent historiography, methodology and sources available, as well as recent production in Anthropology. It also discusses different definitions of prostitution throughout the period in question. Finally, it attempts to present the more important aspects of labor market for prostitution.
