Resumen:
Forest decline is a worldwide observed phenomena. Single-cause approaches to explain the recurring stand-level dieback failed. The "cohort senescense-theory" postulate three generic factors: predisposing factors (like air pollution, climatic change, old age, etc.); precipitating or triggering factors (periodically fluctuating or recurring environmental stresses such as frost damage, storms, droughts, floods, etc.); decline accelerating or hastening factors (biotic agents, etc.), after a period of chronic stress will lead to premature senescence. We have focused in Nothofagus pumilio particularly and the effects of precipitation and temperature. In these forest with dieback synthoms we found distinct patterns of growth and related the start of growth decline to drought events or shifts in temperature as triggering o predisposing factors for the dieback phenomenon.
