A Lorentz metric on the manifold of positive definite 2x2 matrices and foliations by ellipses

Let E be the (three dimensional) space of all ellipses in the plane centred at the origin. We use a Lorentz metric on E to describe all foliations of (open sets of) the pointed plane by ellipses.
