Resumen:
The plain viscacha, Lagostomus maximus is a histrichomorph rodent thathas unique reproductive features such as polyovulation (more than 800ovocytes). Around 12 embryos attaches to the uterus and only twooffspring are born. The rest of the embryos are reabsorbed. Herein, theuterus and embryonic sacs of six females were studied by the ultrasoundscan. Only in three females an early pregnancy was diagnosed. After thehysterectomy the pregnancy and the number of implantation sites wereconfirmed. In the six viscachas the morphometric data obtained of theuteri concurred with the ultrasound exam. This preliminary study probesthat ultrasonography is a reliable diagnostic technique for the evaluationof early pregnancy and could be used to determinate the time of thephysiological embryonary death in this specie.
