Resumen:
Galectin (gal)-1, -3 and -9, b-galactoside-binding lectins, are expressed inthe hemochorial placenta and is implicated in establishing maternal-fetalimmune tolerance. However, their expression in endotheliochorialplacenta remains unclear. We have analyzed the expression pattern of gal-1 (prototypical), gal-3 (chimeric) and gal-9 (tandem) lectins during dogendotheliochorial placentation. In particular, endothelium expression ofgal-1, -3 and -9 was strong during gestation. Immunoreactivity of chorionicmesenchyme, glands and junctional zone against gal-1, -3 and -9decreased as gestation progressed. We observed no expression of gal-1 inthe syncytiotrophoblast. In addition, gal-3 and 9 expressions were foundonly in mature placenta near to maternal vessels. Our results suggest, thehigher affinity of the cytotrophoblast to gal-1, -3 and -9 in early pregnancycould be related to invasiveness process during endotheliochorialplacentation.
