(12-15, 16-20 y >20 m; Pi>1).
HABITAT USE AND BEHAVIOR OF COMMERSON`S DOLPHIN (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) IN SURROUNDINGS
OF SANTA CRUZ RIVER
Marine mammals in surroundings
of Santa Cruz River have been poorly studied. The
objective of this study was to analyze habitat use and behavior of Commerson` s
dolphin to assess conservation and management tools. During January, March 2004
and March 2005, land-based observation and line-transects on boat were made. Behavioral
state was determined and potential relationship between behavioral pattern and
environmental features were explored. Hypotheses of interest were tested using log
linear models. To determine the habitat use, the study area was divided into 1
Km2 cells assigning categories of depth and benthic slope. An index
of preference for each depth or slope category was then calculated as follow where Ui represents the use of category i, and Ai is the relative availability of category i. The behavioral catalog described for
the Commerson`s dolphin in the study area was: traveling, slow traveling,
milling, rest, socializing, diving and stationary swimming. The activity
pattern showed a significant relationship with the state of tide while no relationship
with time of day was observed. From depth availability (0-40m), dolphins showed
high relative use of depth between 11 and 40m (Pi>1),
being the category 21-30 m the most preferred, whereas they showed high
preference of areas with steep bottom slope (12-15, 16-20 y >20 m; Pi>1).
