Performance and Perspectives of the Argentinean Co-operatives

This paper analyzes the evolution of the Argentinean cooperative movement after the economic and political crisis of 2001 and its prospects to face the current international crisis. Given the sharp increase in cooperative units after the crisis, particularly of those aimed to generate employment, this paper studies their economic performance during the growth phase of the national economy and the factors that shaped this evolution, in order to assess the movement outlook related to the international crisis started in 2007. This analysis is based on data from the last Cooperatives and Mutuals economic census, information from various government agencies and systematic data of the continuous household survey (Encuesta Permanente de Hogares, INDEC) for 2003-2009.
