Resumen:
GoalsRecently, research has addressed the relationship between stable isotope analysis and the health, disease, and nutrition of human populations in the past. The aim of the presentation is to evaluate the δ15N, δ18O and δ13C in collagen and bioapatite variability in relation to the health and nutrition conditions of the individuals recovered in Lake Salitroso (Santa Cruz, Argentina). Material and MethodsA minimum of 118 individuals from 37 burial structures from the last 2600 years have been identified in this skeletal series. The available values of δ15N, δ18O and δ13C in collagen and bioapatite were used. In relation to paleopathological studies, we considered previous data on indicators of metabolic-systemic stress, such as cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis, and infectious processes both non-specific (eg generalized periosteal reactions) and specific (eg case of possible vertebral TB).ResultsThe results indicate that these populations have a diet based on terrestrial resources of the Patagonian steppe (δ13C and δ15N) and a reduced mobility to the East of the Andes mountain range (δ18O). The results in paleopathologies indicate a moderate prevalence and a mild severity of these indicators in the collection.DiscussionIn this exploratory work, the results obtained will allow linking the isotopic variability identified in the collection with paleopathological investigations. The link between these two lines of research will allow us to characterize a population of hunter-gatherers in southern South America during the late Holocene.
