Resumen:
Mechanical ventilation (MV) iscrucial in the recovery of patients with severe respiratory failure. Theexpiratory phase, in particular, presents specific dynamic complexities. In thiscontext, control systems represent fundamental components for the adequateperformance of MV systems. However, traditional control approaches employed in theliterature have limitations in addressing these complexities and ensuringaccurate performance. This article addresses the challenges associated with controllingthe expiratory stage in MV systems through a robust and effective solutionbased on sliding mode control. In particular, the proposed control approach inthis article is based on a non-linear model recently validated in theliterature. Thus, the objective is to overcome the limitations of traditionalapproaches and provide a robust and efficient control solution that overcomes thesolutions available in the literature. The results show the potential of thiscontrol strategy in real clinical settings. The sliding mode control approachimproves the performance and convergence of MV systems, contributing to moreeffective ventilation therapy and better patient recovery.
