Resumen:
Glaucoma is the first irreversible cause of blindness worldwide. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the development and progression of the disease in eye structures and brain areas related to the visual system. The lens is rich in antioxidants that contribute to maintain the redox homeostasis in the eye. Therefore, this work aimed to explore the redox status of the lens in an experimental glaucoma model. Three-month Wistar rats underwent the cauterization of two of the four episcleral veins of the left eye to induce glaucoma (glaucoma group, G, n=12), whereas the control group received a sham procedure (C, n=12). Seven days after surgery, rats were euthanized, eyes were enucleated, and the right (RL) and left (LL) lenses were isolated (CICUAL FFyB n° 3314). Nitrite levels, damage to proteins, antioxidant enzyme activities, and glutathione levels were evaluated in lens lysates.G-LL showed an increase of 138% in nitrite levels (p
