Resumen:
The aim of this research is to explore tissue engineering alternatives for bone repair. The objective was to 3D print resorbable scaffolds that mimic bone in terms of stiffness and porosity. Furthermore, the scaffolds should have antimicrobial activity that would be beneficial during surgery. To this end, polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate polymer (PHBV) was used in combination with Bioglass 45S5 in a lab-made filament, and scaffolds were printed with particular attention to the porosity in the printing conditions. The printed scaffolds were dip-coated to achieve surface roughness to improve cell adhesion, and antimicrobial agent - lavender essential oil - was incorporated on the surface. The release of the oil components over short periods of time, up to two days, and its effect on a pathogenic biofilm-forming bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, were tested.
